Tamil Nadu is a state in southern India, bordered by the Indian states of Kerala to the west, Karnataka to the north, Andhra Pradesh to the east, and Sri Lanka to the south. It is the largest state in southern India, covering an area of 51,528 km2 (20,322 sq mi). The state consists of 39 districts, and is divided into three regions: north, east, and west. The capital is Chennai. The state is a linguistic and cultural mixture of Indian subcontinent. During the middle of the first millennium BCE, the area was an important trading center and the southernmost outpost of the Aryan civilization, as evidenced by the Nagas (the ancient Tamils) and the use of the Pallava script in their inscriptions and copper-plate grants. These ancient Tamil settlers and the early Pallavas of Kanchipuram had a profound impact on the current culture of the state. The dynasties of the Pandyas and the Madurai Nayaks ruled the area during the late 13th and 14th century. During the late 16th century, the imperial Cholas established control over the area, and the Thanjavur Nayakar dynasty ruled the area during the early 17th century, after a Chola invasion. Tamil Nadu had its golden age during the early 16th century under the Vijayanagar Empire. The British ruled the state from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, and it became an official part of the British Indian empire in the early 20th century. The district is famed for its ancient temples, monuments, and architectural landmarks. The Brihadisvara Temple, Kailasanathar Temple, and Shore Temple are some of the most visited temples in Tamil Nadu. Tiruvannamalai is the only temple district that has an international reputation. The state contains more than 1,400 km (895 mi) of coastline and a vast network of inland water bodies. It is one of the most important states in the Indian Agriculture and fishery sectors. Tamil Nadu is the third largest state economy of India. Tamil Nadu's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) was estimated to be $99.24 billion (US$380.57 billion) in 2017. The state's GDP is the second largest in India, behind the Indian state of Maharashtra and the fifth largest in Asia. Tamil Nadu was ranked among the world's fastest growing economies at rank 19 in the world by
